Scott Hahn: Page 2 (by Miles McKee) final authority in all matters of faith. However, Mr. Hahn and his papal companions have exchanged the authority of God’s word for the authority of the opinions of sinful and flawed men. It was a poor exchange on Mr. Hahn’s part but he seems to justify his actions by the fact that somehow all his changes made him feel good. He has exchanged gold for brass and truth for lies. The rest of his story is more of the same! He talks about how Dr. John Gerstner failed to move him. Alas, professor Gerstner is now dead and can’t give us his side of the story. But you know the old adage, ‘A man with an argument is no match for a man with an experience.” Alas, this is as tragic as it is true. When one rejects the Scripture then his “experience” becomes the measure by which all things are judged. He thus becomes unreachable and unteachable. It was obvious to all that Mr. Hahn had stubbornly purposed to head for Rome. Even his students told him as much. Yet Mr. Hahn claims to have remained oblivious to that which was perfectly obvious to others. Self-deception, after all, is a wonderful thing when let out of its cage. When he finally ‘comes home to Rome’ he tells us about many of the wonderful practices he is now involved with. We don’t need to go into them because all of Rome’s blasphemies have been thoroughly exposed and dealt with by able scholars. However, we can learn from this tale of woe that doctrinal error never travels alone. Embrace one false doctrine and others will necessarily follow. Throw out Sola Scriptura and you will eventually throw out Sola Fide. Throw out Sola Scriptura and Sola Fide and you will ultimately throw out Christ alone as your hope. Now Mr. Hahn hopes to be saved by the Pope and the Pope’s church. The Pope, you see, claims to be Christ’s substitute, but we must observe that he is a very poor substitute indeed. Imagine trading a High Priest who has the power of an endless life for a mere mortal who will go to his grave like all before him. Imagine trading the finished, completed work of Christ for a fictitious ongoing sacrifice of the Mass. Imagine trading the matchless intercession of Christ for the imaginary intercession of invented saints. It’s a pity that Mr. Hahn did not read the counsel of his fellow Presbyterian, Robert Murray M'Cheyne who said, “When you are reading a book in a dark room, and come to a difficult part, you take it to a window to get more light. So take your Bibles to Christ.” But, Mr. Hahn has turned his back on Christ Jesus and His Gospel. He is lost from the fold of those who trust in Christ alone for their salvation. He labors diligently to take away as many people to the papal system of the Catholic Church for their hope of salvation as he can persuade. No doubt he is enjoying a modicum of celebrity status among the Pope’s servants. Though Hahn claims he “asked Jesus Christ into his heart” when he was a teenager, perhaps (despite all the smoke and mirrors) he never really understood who Christ is, or what biblical salvation is. Perhaps he never knew the authority of Scripture, nor really placed his faith in the finished work of Christ’s sacrifice for us on the cross; and so therefore he now has accepted the delusion that the rituals of the Catholic Church can do that saving work for him—and therefore he now tries to get everyone to join him in those vain rituals. He would do well to repent and sue the Lord for peace. He would do well to go to Christ Jesus, the only priest who can save and say, “Thou alone hast power, I know To save a wretch like me; To whom, or whither should I go If I should run from Thee?” Permission is given by the author, Miles McKee, to copy this article if it is done in its entirety without any changes.
