Maghera in 1880

1880 Belfast/Ulster Street Directory

Maghera, a thriving market town in County Derry, thirty six miles N. by W. from Belfast. It consists of one long and spacious street, from which several smaller ones branch off, the principal of which are Main and Hall Streets, which are making great progress in improvements. The houses, which are chiefly built of stone, and are modern buildings, have a respectable appearance. Linen cloth is the staple trade. Petty Sessions are held ob the last Saturday of each month. A constabulary station is in the town. The market days are Tuesday and Friday - the former for flax, pork, horses and cattle, butter, eggs, fowl and general merchandise ; and the latter for corn. Fairs are held on the last Tuesday of every month.
