Justification Part 7 ( by Miles McKee)

Inventions and Myths

Anyone wishing to explore this subject of imputed righteousness in more depth should read chapter 6 of Bonar’s “Everlasting Righteousness.” One further thing needs to be added before we go on to consider the marvelous subject of propitiation and that is, there are some who, in opposing the Gospel, foolishly attempt to argue that this business of imputed righteousness if an invention of the apostle Paul. The truth is, however, we actually discover that Jesus taught it Himself. In a very precious statement our Lord said,

"He that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man's reward" (Matt. 10:41).

Here the Lord Jesus is teaching on substitution and imputation. He who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man receives a righteous man's reward.

Remember this,
"None is righteous, no, not one" (Rom. 3:10). There is "no one . . . good but God alone" (Luke 18:19).

The only good man therefore is He who is, ‘God manifest in the flesh’. He is "Jesus Christ the Righteous" (1 John 2:1). He is "the Holy One of Israel" (Isa. 41:14; 43:14; 49:7). He is the only righteous One. And he who receives this one righteous Man in the name of the righteous Man shall receive the righteous Man's reward.

This again is very good news for, although we used the picture of God’s courtroom to illustrate Justification, this does not mean God’s courtroom is a fiction. The scripture warns us,

"We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ" (2 Cor. 5:10).

We can come to the judgment in our own name and with our own performance. We can come with all our good deeds and works. We can present them to the judge saying, "Here I am, Lord and the works I have performed!" This is a risky and foolish business! Only if we have a righteousness that fully measures up to and is equal with God’s righteousness will we stand. But if our righteousness falls one tiny bit short, we will be damned and condemned.

But, because of the Gospel, we may come to the judgment in the name of the righteous Man, Jesus Christ. He is the only Man who has a righteousness that the judgment bar of God will acknowledge. His is a perfect flawless righteousness and when we come, in His name, having received Him as our righteous man, we will receive His reward.

There are many other things which could be said on this great subject of justification but we have covered enough ground for this chapter. The reader will profit greatly by reading and re-reading Romans 3:21-26. Let it sink into your heart and you will never be the same again.

“My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust as sweet a frame
But wholly lean on Jesus name.
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand.
When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne.
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand”.
