JUSTIFICATION (Part 1)

“All the sins of His people met in one tremendous mass. On the cross, Jesus endured the penalty due for all the sin of His people! He put away our sins, the whole mountainous mass of the sin of all those for whom He stood as a substitute, and for whom He suffered the penalty. Our sins were completely put away, everlastingly put away!

”All of our sins, of every size, shape, form, hue, degree, or fashion, are altogether gone! Crimson sins, black sins, crying sins, every sort of iniquity from your childhood until now, and right on till you enter into the rest of the Beloved, they were all taken and laid upon Christ, and he made an end of them all when He offered up His great sacrifice at the cross! He has put away sin as a whole for His chosen ones!

"All praise to Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding His blood for us. He has made us His kingdom and His priests who serve before God His Father. Give to Him everlasting glory! He rules forever and ever! Amen!" Rev. 1:5-6

Spurgeon

ROM 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ....”

“There is, perhaps, no more subtle or plausible error, on the subject of Justification, than that which makes it rest on the indwelling presence, and the gracious work, of the Holy Spirit in the heart . . . nothing can be more unscriptural in itself, or more pernicious to the souls of men, than the substitution of the gracious work of the Spirit in us, for the vicarious work of Christ for us, as the ground of our pardon and acceptance with God.”
James Buchanan, The Doctrine of Justification

Here come da Judge!!!!!!!

Have you ever heard the story of how a Judge came into court and set all the guilty offenders free? All the prisoners were guilty of their crimes and deserving of the death penalty, yet the court declared them all not guilty. They all knew they were guilty and what’s more, THE JUDGE KNEW THEY WERE GUILTY yet they all walked free.

And all this was done as a matter of Justice!!!!!!!!

At this point you might feel like the Irishman who wore a tee shirt embroidered with a capital K. Someone asked him what the “K” stood for, to which he answered “it stands for confused” “But” said his friend, “I thought confused was spelt with a C”. “Yes” he replied “but you don’t know just how confused I really am”.

The key to clearing up our understanding of how a Judge can justly clear the guilty is found embedded in the great Bible truth of Justification by Grace through Faith.

RIGHT STANDING BEFORE A HOLY GOD

It is sad to say that in many Christian circles, these days, the Doctrine of Justification, a central truth of the Gospel, is almost forgotten. That’s why, perhaps, the church is in so much trouble! Justification, however, although being eclipsed by many doctrinal novelties, remains both a vital and essential truth in the scheme of salvation and to forget it or to make it of minor importance is to take a short cut to apostasy.

WOODWORM IN A YO-YO?

Justification, in fact, is one of the deep things of the Gospel. The believer who fails to see this will have faulty walk with God and until his understanding of this great truth is cleared up he’ll probably be as confused as a woodworm in an old fashioned Yo-Yo.

Not only is Justification one of the deep things of the Gospel it is also a radical, revolutionary and redemptive doctrine. Although easily misunderstood and often misrepresented, Justification remains the truth by which, as Martin Luther said, the church stands or falls. Why so? Simply stated, Justification deals with the great question of how we, as condemned law breaking sinners, obtain right standing before God.

Are you clear about how The One True and Holy God brings sinful rebels into a right relationship with Himself? Understanding the truth of Justification will give us the vital answer to this urgent question.

JUSTIFICATION Vs. EXPERIENCE

One of the great problems today as to why Justification is not at the top of every Christians “Top Ten List of Popular Doctrines” is that we live in a generation, which dwells on its own experience. The believers’ experience and feelings are for many the focal point of Christian life. That is all well and good but genuine experience must be grounded on solid objective facts.

LA-LA LAND

The realm of experience is enjoyable but it’s only the icing on the cake. The sad truth is that many believers who major on their experience eventually burn out and become disillusioned. The experience realm is exhausting. In that realm one usually has to go one bigger and one better. It becomes a matter of bigger dreams, bigger visions, bigger and better goose bumps and it all too often degenerates into a contest as to who can out-experience the other.

“My leg grew two inches”

“That’s nothing mine grew by four”.

Unrealism eventually takes over and people start living in La-La Land. Is it any wonder then that the drop out rate from such circles is so high.

THE SOLID ROCK

However, God’s “Salvation Words” such as Justification, Propitiation and Redemption etc. can not be taught out of experience. They must be taught out of God’s unchanging word. Unfortunately the experience-centered Christian will have great problems seeing the relevance of Justification. “It’s a bit too academic and too dry” they say “and besides they ask, is it really relevant to my life?”
Not only is it relevant it is vital to our Christian lives (even though it won‘t make our legs grow). Our lives, however, will be shipwrecked if we don’t understand this great truth! This great doctrine is invaluable. It is a treasure chest of comfort, joy and peace. This great truth of Justification brings the believer to the Solid Rock of Christ and His accomplishments on our behalf and that is something we can all build our lives upon.

BAD PRESS

Another reason why Justification gets a bad press today is because it is a distasteful doctrine to the self-satisfied man. Maybe as you read this chapter you might find your feathers being a wee bit ruffled. The truth is, you see, when Justification is rightly taught it takes away every sense of human merit and gives Christ all the glory.

JUSTIFICATION PLUS NOTHING

We, most of us, suffer from an innate feeling which says surely there is something I can do, just even some little something I can do, to complete, add to or supplement my acceptance before God. The doctrine of Justification, however, teaches us that there is absolutely nothing we can do or, for that matter, anyone else can do, which will add to or assist the work which Christ has already done on our behalf. It is the doing and dying of Christ alone which saves us. There is nothing we can add to that and any attempt to add anything would be sacrilege. It would be like Abel of old trying to add a daisy to his blood sacrifice just to complete it.

To make this word Justification really simple lets establish some indisputable facts.

Fact 1: God is the Holy God.

1John 1:5 “this then is the message.... that God is light and in him is no darkness at all.”

There is no darkness whatsoever in God. He is a God who by nature is totally separate from any shade of darkness. There is no twist in His character and no secret devious side in His nature. He is light. He is the Holy God.

Fact 2: Man is a rebel.

When this Holy God created the world He put into it, the apex of His creation a man created in His own image. That man, Adam, had one simple task-- to be obedient to God --but he failed miserably and became a rebel, becoming separated and independent from God (in his own thinking)

Fact 3: The Divine Dilemma

Man has willingly and deliberately sinned. So God the Holy One looks at man the rebel and God’s law and sense of justice says, “Kill him, execute him, for the wages of sin is death”. But God’s love says, “save him, I don’t want him to perish”.

God’s love, by the way, must not be equated with any sense of weakness, condoning or even complicity with the sin. God hates sin and finds sin so offensive that His holy justice always demands the death penalty when it occurs. However, His love wants to save the guilty sinner.

So God, it might seem, has a difficulty. Here we find something which looks like a “Divine Dilemma”. How can He save His people yet honor His law? The law of His nature says punish His creation but the law of His love says save him.

Now it is important to grasp this next statement. Since the conflict is in God, the conflict must be resolved in God and by God...But how can God save that which he should kill? (To continue, click link for Part 2)
