As believers, we have the privilege of continuously following Jesus. We began our Christian walk by turning our backs upon the idolatry of our hearts and 'looking to Jesus'. He was enough for us back then for He had overcome us with power love and grace! And as we looked to Him we found ourselves following Him:—— true following is always related to looking to HIM!
Why trade in looking and following for something less? Do you remember when you first got saved? Looking to Jesus brought rest, peace and healing for your soul. HE was all your righteousness. There was no need to strive to impress God. Jesus was all and in all. Being His follower was wonderful! But for many Christians, the wonder has gone. The reason is tragic; they are no longer looking unto Jesus. Could I be talking about you? Have you left the simplicity which is in Christ Jesus? If so, I’m sure you’ve noticed how your life has become tangled and complicated again. Where did the peace go? Where has the joy gone?
It’s time to get back to following and looking again to Jesus. He alone is the author and finisher of your faith. He alone is your righteousness. It is time to start bathing again in the Gospel. He is enough! As you look to HIM as your only righteousness He will restore and maintain your spiritual health, He will restore and maintain your peace; He will supply your Joy. Jesus can and will be enough for every situation in your life.
The great Scottish Gospel Minister, Horatius Bonar said,
“The way to follow is to look unto Jesus. You may think you know this but, when you play "follow the leader," check to see who is at the head of the line. Are you sure you are following Jesus? Give yourself a spiritual check-up. Maybe your leader is your Church, your career, your ambitions or your dreams? Is Jesus really the center of your life?”
It takes a lot of strength to become a real follower. And there’s a lesson to be learned-------you have no strength of your own! No amount of good resolutions on your part will make you a follower! Your strength and even your will to follow, comes from Him. Learn then to abide in Him and to delight in Him and you will discover this. Beware of substituting anything else for Him. Beware of seeking to build your own Kingdom and a future of your own design. Follow Him and He will be your refreshment, comfort and Joy. Follow your own devices and you will wither!
So who are you following today? Is it Him? If you are following Him, remember it is only because of GRACE! Grace is a conqueror! In the 1800’s, W. T. P. Wolston, gave us some timeless wisdom when he said,
“Christ blessed, healed, and helped people right and left by thousands, yet He never urged one such to follow Him — not one. He never told any man who had been healed by His mighty power to follow Him. No, grace does not buy hearts; it wins them.”
As His follower, have you thanked Him for this grace toward you today? It was grace that won you! And remember; no matter how dedicated you are to Him you still need His grace moment by moment! Why? Because, although you are a believer, you are still a thoroughbred sinner! What a suitable candidate, therefore, you are for the grace of God. Grace is made for the sinner and the sinner is made for grace. As you look continually to Jesus you will know more of this wonderful grace. But, it is more than the grace of forgiveness, it is also the grace to serve and the grace to worship. It is, ‘Grace abounding to the chief of sinners’.
As you look daily unto Jesus and live in His Grace, you will not, as some contend, sin more. On the contrary, grace will give you a clearer understanding of the nature of sin and make it more wretched and contemptible in your eyes. Grace will break you and cause you to see that the Lord Jesus willingly endured the most painful, horrible, and disgraceful death for you. Grace will dramatically bring home to you the striking reality of this love and teach you, as His follower, to live, not for yourselves, but for Jesus. Grace will teach you that HE is enough! As you follow Him, grace will make you willing and ready to present your body a living sacrifice to the One who lived and died for you.
I urge you to think often of Jesus, meditate on Him, His cross and His Glory. This is the way to follow. The more you know of the love of Jesus for you, the more you will hate those sins, your sins, which put Him on the cross. Keep looking, therefore, to Him. Let your vision be Him. Try praying the words of the this old Hymn:
“Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.”

“I am born for God only. Christ is nearer to me than father, or mother, or sister - a near relation, a more affectionate Friend; and I rejoice to follow Him, and to love Him. Blessed Jesus! You are all I want -a forerunner to me in all I ever shall go through as a Christian, a minister, or a missionary."
